Adaptogenic Hot Cocoa
So with the wellness trend sweeping the nation and my kitchen pantry, I was so excited to develop an easy and delicious adaptogenic hot chocolate that tastes better than anything I've ever bought off the shelf. I swear! I shared it with a few friends just to be sure, and 3 out of 3 agree. #MarketResearch
This cup of cocoa goes the extra mile with the addition of collagen and adaptogens, which are linked to glowing skin and a boosted immune system.
So before we dive into the recipe, what makes something an adaptogen anyway? "Adaptogen” is a name given to certain herbs, plants, and natural substances that help the body naturally adapt to stressors (helloooo holiday stress.) I used the adaptogen Maca, because it is believed to be a hormone balancer, booster for the immune system, and increases energy, stamina, improved, memory, and focus, among other things. Plus it has a naturally creamy flavor that works well with cacao.
Speaking of holiday stress, after you whip up a cup of this hot cocoa, read this blog post and grab a mantra to help lift your spirits. There’s no better way to wind down and warm the heart and soul on a cold, wintry night.
Now on to the good stuff, the hot chocolate recipe is below!
1 Serving
INGREDIENTS
2 tablespoons almond butter (creamy, not crunchy)
2 teaspoons coconut butter
1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon raw cacao powder
3/4 teaspoon Maca powder (optional)
1 scoop Collagen Peptides (optional)
1 teaspoon maple syrup (honey works, too!)
1 1/3 cups boiling water
DIRECTIONS
Bring water to boil.
Add all ingredients to a blender.
Blend, pour, and enjoy!
If you want to go off-script, a few other adaptogens you could add to this hot chocolate are Reishi (mushroom) and Tocos (rice bran soluble). Since Reishi is a mushroom, it is said to be grounding and stress relieving and won't have the energetic effect of Maca. It's a great substitute if you'll be going to bed immediately after drinking your hot chocolate potion.
Of course, you could add a little coconut milk or almond milk, though I found it to be perfectly rich and creamy with hot water. To each their own, as they say, so have fun with it! Happy hot cocoa sipping under the covers, balance seekers.
